IntroductionRYA is a certification recognized throughout the sailing industry by recreational boat owners and crew. RYA courses represent sports boats, windsurfing, powerboat racing, sailing and motor cruising. On average 185,000 people complete RYA courses in 20 countries including the United Kingdom, Ireland, New Zealand, Australia and the Caribbean.
Coursessailing courses include Start Yachting, The Watchleader Practical, Competent Crew, Day Skipper, Coastal Skipper and Yacht Master Ocean Theory. Aboard sailing courses begin at 6pm on Saturday for brief introductions and instructions for the next day which will consist of safety briefings, boat review, and personal gear information. This instruction will be followed by four days of abroad sailing for crew, day and coastal skippers. Some RYA courses are also available online. Online sailing courses are fully supported by an online help desk and consist of animated graphics with interactive sessions and simulations.
Coursework RequirementsCompetent Crew requires no prerequisite experience. The day skipper courses cover boat handling, navigation, and basic piloting. RYA suggests a minimum of 100 miles or more of sailing time for day skipper sailing courses and 15 days of sailing time for coastal skipper sailing courses. At the end of all RYA courses, crew, day skippers and coastal skippers receive a Practical Certification for completing sailing courses.
