What’s a Yard Without a Garden?

Years ago I can remember my father deciding that we would grow our own vegetables, to save money. This wouldn’t have been unusual, except that we lived in a suburban neighborhood, filled with lawns and pools. We owned a double lot, so Dad decided to learn how to grow corn and other things, then he taught us. That summer each of us was required to spend some time weeding, hoeing, or watering our vegetables, and that’s when I learned to love working in the soil. It was the first of many gardens I have started over the years and the reason I never quite feel settled in a new place until I have something growing, even if it’s in a dish on the window.
