Solving the Fruit Fly Problem

By admin | October 18, 2011

Every time you hear the word fruit mentioned, you may not help but think of the vitamins and minerals that you can get from it.  However, there is something else that may cause you to worry though: fruit fly. This tiny pest would not really be much of a problem if you only have one or two in your kitchen.  However, if these multiply to the hundreds and if these begin to invade your living room and even your bedrooms, then there is no other recourse but to seek solutions to such problem.  Unfortunately, this happens really more often because these pests are not the loner types.Just by the term itself, you should already know what prompts fruit flies to appear.  First of all you may wonder how they actually appeared when your place is not anywhere near an orchard, a fruit stand, or a supermarket.  Actually, you may not know it but you brought them to your home. There could be fruit fly larvae in the plastic bags which contain the fruits from the supermarket.  The best thing to do therefore is to bring your own bag and use this to bring the fruits that you have purchased for home.  This could prevent bringing the fruit fly larvae home.A fruit fly can easily sense the presence of fruits even if it is far away. This does not mean though that you should absolutely stop from buying fruits and deprive yourself of nutrients just to prevent these pests from coming to your place.  What you can do is to make sure that the fruits are well sealed or kept in containers.  It is also good to put these in cold storage, particularly in the fridge.  One of the things that a fruit fly would certainly avoid is the cold.  This is why such pests would usually bother you during the warm months and not at all during the winter.Once these flies appear though, the best remedy would be to use a repellent.  However, these could be so tiny that you may not even see them hovering in your kitchen until one actually lost its way and hit your eyes. There may be some downsides of using a repellent though, especially if this is chemical-based.  The safer way of solving the problem is to make a bowl trap.  This is actually a device where you put small fruit pieces dipped in vinegar.  When a fruit fly attempts to land on a fruit it finds itself in vinegar and dies there.
