After my experience with angies list, I am constantly telling all my friends and family to go online before hiring any contractors. I was lucky as I hired one, but before having him start on my home I looked him up on the list. To my amazement I hired a really good person just by the luck of the draw. I read of a lot of shady contractors and want to make sure no one I know has to deal with that.
