How Do Shared Offices Work?

I am trying to find an economical way to move from my home office to an off site office since my kids do not let me work while I am at home. Can anyone tell me how shared offices work? I am intrigued by this idea, but not sure whether or not it is really right for me. Do I just get a desk in an office that is shared with all sorts of people, and what sort of rules are involved? I am sure there must be at least some ground rules about how you pay for things and what you are allowed (or not allowed) to do in these offices.
