The experience of doing repeated assignments with the same group of people offered a real world view of today’s virtual work world. As a consultant working for Strategic Staffing Solutions, I work at Capital One Bank as project manager. The assignments that I have been assigned are with people in different parts of the United States and India. The projects have workers who are Capital One employees and contracters hired by Capital One. In addition, Capital One contracts with partners like IBM for computer hardware and software support and Verizon for communications. Because Capital One does business is many cities, all of the projects are done virtually by using conference calls, emails, telephones and instant messages. There are people on the different projects that work on the same campus who I never met except on a conference call..

The parttime UTD online program demonstrated the great benefits and frustrations of working on virtual projects. It also provided people language skills because of the demands of the program. Over a one year period, the virtual group that I was a member went from four to five members and back to four. We had a birth, a death of a parent and a marriage. We were spread across all timezones of the United States. We had 50 weekly assignments and three major projects to complete. Most of these projectsand all of the major assignments had to be completed by the group. By the end of the year, the core group bounded and learned to work together. This is real life experience of working remotely is not possible in a classroom setting.

I was petrified when I started the program. By the end of the program, I was convinced that the on-line program for project management was the best choice. I have friends all across the United States and in Africa because of this program. The work situation that I described is the norm now. Every project is virtual and involves many people with different skill sets, educational experiences, race, religion, and country of origin.
